DESCRIPTION AND ORGANIZATION OF RESIDENCE LIFE STAFF

Director of Residence Life
The Director of Residence Life is responsible for the overall operation of housing and student personnel functions of the Office of Residence Life. He/she defines and reviews policies and procedures through a continual assessment of student needs. This staff member supervises the Resident Directors and assists them in the total operation of the Living/Learning Centers. It is his/her responsibility to provide leadership and guidance in the implementation of policies, procedures and programs in all areas of residence life.

Associate and Assistant Directors of Residence Life

The Assistant Directors of Residence Life are responsible for the accountability report of the students who live in the Living/Learning Center. This includes responsibility for room assignments, room renewal, room change and for the entire computer process. They assist the Director in the administration of all housing operations to ensure achievement of the Residence Life programs and service goals. He/she has responsibility for providing assistance with services and programs in the living/learning, counseling, orientation and discipline areas for the resident student. This position works with considerable independence under the Director of Residence Life.

Resident Director

Each Living/Learning Center is under the supervision of a Resident Director. This staff member's role is one of initiating, implementing, maintaining and evaluating programs in the Living/Learning Centers which will aid in the educational, social and cultural development of the individual student and the living group as a whole. The Resident Director supervises the Resident Assistants and the desk personnel in his/her building.

Director of Duquesne C.A.R.E.S.
(Creating Awareness and a Renewed Environment of Students) The Director of C.A.R.E.S. is a professional counselor with expertise in the prevention, intervention, and treatment of alcohol and other drug problems. C.A.R.E.S. services include: orientation of freshmen; training Resident Assistants and other university personnel; programming for students who are sanctioned for violations of University policy or state/federal laws; educational programs for students and employees; alternative activities for students; grief counseling; intervention services; referrals for treatment; support for recovery; and a comprehensive library of alcohol/other drug resource materials. The Director responds to the ongoing needs of the Office of Residence Life and collaborates with various University departments to encourage positive, healthy choices that are both legal and life-giving in the spirit of the University mission.

Graduate Assistants
The Office of Residence Life employs six Graduate Assistants(GA). Each GA assist the Resident Director of his/her building in the supervision of Resident Assistants, Student Aides, and the enforcement of policy/procedure and program planning. There is also a GA on the Honors College Floor in Assumption Hall, third floor.

Resident Assistants
Resident Assistants are paraprofessional staff who assist the Resident Director. The Resident Assistant is directly responsible for programming for students in his/her assigned living area. This student will assist the RD with the academic, social, and personal problems of residents. He/she will work with individuals toward the development of self, plan for social and recreational activities within the Living/Learning Center, as well as help each student in his/her living area to become a responsible member of the Duquesne community.

Night Clerks/Night Aides

Five full time Night Clerks staff the front desks from midnight to 8:00 a.m. In addition, approximately 14 Night Aides assist with the late night/early morning duties.

Desk Aides

More than 75 student aides are hired to cover the front desk of the five Living/Learning Center. Their duties include; checking I.D.s, assisting with fire alarms, answering the questions and concerns of students and visitors, and enforce policies.

Clerical Student Aides
These students assist the Office of Residence Life staff with the numerous activities that take place on a daily basis. Their duties include: duplicating, light typing, filing, delivering memos, answering telephones, and assisting with special projects.
