Campus Facilities and Services

 

  1. Athletic Fields
    The Arthur J. Rooney Athletic Field and McClosky Field and Track are magnificent year-round athletic fields in the heart of the University's campus. Both areas are fully lighted and are used for individual recreation, intramural and intercollegiate competition.
  2. Athletic Office
    For information on the University's varsity teams, call ext. 412-396-6565/6566 or stop by the Athletic office in Palumbo Center. For information on intramurals, call the Intramurals and Recreation Office at ext. 5050 or stop by the Director's Office in the Palumbo Center.
  3. Automatic Teller Machines
    Students may withdraw money from checking and/ or saving accounts with their ATM cards. There are four ATM machines on campus. Locations include Towers Living Learning Center, Brottier Living Learning Center, AJ Palumbo Center and the Duquesne Union. Questions can be directed to the PNC Bank representative at (412) 768-5989, or stop by the branch located on the second floor of the Duquesne Union.
  4. Basketball Court (Outdoor)
    The basketball court is for student use. Lights are automatically turned on until 10:45 p.m.
  5. Check Cashing
    Duquesne students may cash personal checks in the Cashier's office, located on the ground floor of the Administration Building, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday though Friday. A validated I.D.card must be presented along with personal checks. A limit of fifty dollars ($ 50.00) per day is imposed on all checks cashed.
  6. Copy Machines
    Public access copiers are located in the Gumberg Library, Law Library, Law School, Towers, St. Ann's Hall, Duquesne Union, Canevin Hall, College Hall, Administrative Building and Rangos. Cash and virtual cash DU can be used at these locations.
  7. Laundry
    Washers and dryers are provided at no extra charge within each Living/Learning Center. Report any damage to the front desk of the respective Living/ Learning Center so they may be repaired as quickly as possible.
  8. Library:
    The Gumberg Library is located on Locust Street behind the Duquesne Union. Books and materials may be renewed at the Circulation desk or by phone. The fine for overdue material is $0.20 per day with increased fines for all special materials.   9. Parking
    All students are eligible to purchase a University parking permit. All vehicles parked on campus during enforcement hours must display a valid Duquesne University permit.   10. Residence Hall Association: Call 412-396-5030
    Residence Hall Association (RHA) is the resident-run governing body of the resident student population. It consists of a campus-wide executive board designed to serve as the representative voice of the resident student population. RHA maintains executive offices on the first floor of Assumption Hall and invites all resident students to participate as active members of RHA.
  11. Short Stop: Call 412-396-5630
    The Short Stop convenience Store is located in the Towers/Living learning Center and is accessible from the Towers' Food Court or the Parking lot located between Towers and St. Martin's. The Short Stop sells food, drink, personal supplies, and rents VCR movies with a valid DU Card. Resident meal plan flex dollars are not accepted in the convenience store. Cash or virtual cash may be used.
  12. Stamps:
    A stamp vending machine is located on the third floor of the Union. Stamps may also be purchased at the Student Mail Center, located on the second floor of the Towers Living Learning Center.
  13. Student Government Associations:
    The Student Government Association is designed to provide a forum for the expression of student views and interests, to maintain academic freedom and student views and interests, to maintain academic freedom and student rights, and to provide effective representation in the policy making and operations of the University. Two major functions of the S.G.A. are to serve as student representative on crucial University committees and to recognize and fund student organizations.
  14. Student Mail Center:The Student Mail Center (known as the SMC) is located on the second floor of the Towers Living/Learning Center. The telephone number is 412-396-6601.

    Mailboxes are assigned by the Office of Residence Life. Combinations for mailboxes are to be given out by mailing services personnel. Combinations of mailboxes of non-returning students are charged on a yearly basis.

    Mailing services receives a daily delivery from the United States Postal Service. Mail for the students is transported to the mail centers twice daily. The majority of student mail is delivered Monday though Friday at approximately 8:30 a.m. and first class mail is usually distributed to mail boxes by noon.

    Packages:
    Postal Express packages are delivered to the main mail center in Rockwell Hall usually by 11:00 a.m. Call 412-396-6192 to check on express packages. All other express packages (Federal Express, UPS. Airborne and DHL) are delivered to the Receiving Department in Mellon Hall. Call extension 412-396-6008 to check on these.

    Any express packages slated for a weekend or holiday delivery are signed for at the Public Safety office. Those expresses may be picked up there. Any expresses not picked up on the weekend will be picked up the next scheduled working day and transported to the Student Mailing Center that morning. Expresses not picked up from the Student Mail Center on Friday afternoon are given to Residence Life so students have access to them over the weekend.

    United Parcel Services (UPS) delivers to the Student Mail Center/ Mail Etc. Monday through Friday. Delivery times are determined by the United Parcel Service and may vary due to volume.

    Any package that is received and will not fit into a student's mailbox will be held at the mail center for pickup. A pink notice of arrival will be placed in the student's mailbox. The student must then bring the arrival notice along with the student I.D. to collect their package. Absolutely no packages will be given out without proper ID

    A second and third notice will be given for packages not picked up after the original notice is given. After the third notice is given without response the item will be returned to the sender and marked as "unclaimed-three notices given."

    Window hours during the academic year are Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

    All items are inspected for damages upon receipt from the various carriers. Any damages are reported immediately to the mail services manager and to the student. Mailing services can assist students with filing claims for damages or loss, but it's up to the student to pursue any claims.

    Mail:
    The US Postal Service and other carriers advise users not to send cash or valuables through their systems. All carriers offer insurance coverage to cover loss or damages. Students are asked to advise senders to use their assigned addresses and box numbers on all mail sent to Duquesne University. Students are also asked to have senders use students' proper names when addressing.

    Mail received at the mail center with incorrect box numbers or without box numbers is set aside. After all correctly addressed mail is processed, mail center staff will look up each individually incorrectly addressed item. So to help with speedy delivery, please address mail correctly. Below is the correct addressing format for sending mail to the Student Mail Center:

    Please take special care to use the correct zipcode.

    Mailboxes: If you are having trouble with your mailbox, seek assistance from the SMC staff. If your mailbox is in need of repair, your mail will be held at the center window for you to pick up until your box is repaired. A list of broken boxes is kept at the window and only mail for those boxes listed will be handed out.

    Intra-campus mail can be dropped off at the mail center. It is picked up twice daily for redistribution on campus. The mail center will accept Christmas and Valentine cards to be placed in mailboxes-this mail must be placed in numerical order to speed up processing.

    Please note: mail center staff must process all incoming first class mail before they begin to process intra-campus mail. Students not residing in Duquesne University resident halls cannot retain possession of a mailbox at the Student Mail Center. Students leaving must file a forwarding address with the Student Mail Center. Mail received for students who fail to file forwarding addresses will be returned to the sender.

    The SMC staff will only forward mail for 90 days. Only first and second class mail can be forwarded. Some second class mail may arrive at the forwarding addresses with postage due. This is the responsibility of the student to pay the postage due or refuse acceptance. This can be avoided by notifying senders of your new mailing addresses with the sender. Mailing services is not responsible for a student's mail when the student does not change their address with mailers or file a forwarding address. Please note that some delay may occur during forwarding. We advise students to take special care in making sure that their mailboxes are properly closed and locked after each usage. Combinations are to be kept confidential. We ask that students do their part in maintaining the security of their mailbox.

    U.S. Postal Service United States Postal Service drop boxes are located outside the Administration Building, Rockwell Hall and Vickroy Street, inside College Hall and on the circle across from the Student Union. Check each box for pickup times and days. A branch of the United States Postal Services islocated at 700 Grant Street, downtown.


  15. Swimming Pool: Call 412-396-5723
    The swimming pool is located on the second floor of Towers. Students, faculty, administration and employees are permitted to use the pool with valid DU card. There are locker facilities provided at no cost. Please call for pool hours.
  16. Tennis Courts
    Students may use the tennis court located beside Vickroy Living/Learning Center. The tennis team uses the court during their seasons and are to be given consideration during these times. The hours of the tennis court is 8:00 a.m.- 10:45 p.m. At no time are roller-blades, roller skates, or skate boards allowed on the tennis court.
  17. Nite Spot
    The Nite Spot is located on the first floor of the Duquesne Union. Billiards, video games ping-pong and table games are offered.
  18. Vending Machines
    Vending machines are available for your convenience. Please treat them with respect and report needed repairs and any vandalism to the main desk immediately. Refunds can be obtained by calling (412) 461-6400 during business hours.
