How long are the beds in the Living Learning Centers?
We are in the process of changing all of our mattresses from “regular” twin to “extra-long” twin mattresses. Most rooms have the “extra-long” twin beds at this point. To err on the side of caution, we recommend that students purchase the t-shirt (jersey material) sheets, as they will fit either size mattress.

What all comes in each room? Is the furniture in the rooms built-in or moveable? What are the dimensions of the furniture?
Each room has a bed, desk, desk chair, dresser, closet and internet port for each resident. There is one cable television port per room. All rooms feature furniture that can be moved around to suit the taste of the residents of the room. Because we have various styles of furniture, furniture dimensions vary by room. For safety reasons, we do not permit lofting of furniture in any of our buildings.

My schedule conflicts with my assigned move in day (or the return day from a break). Can I come back early?
We strongly encourage students to remain within the established schedules. This ensures that our maintenance and housekeeping staffs will have adequate time to prepare you room, as well as that you will be coming back to a building that’s open. Any requests for early move in must be submitted in writing to Dan Cangilla, Assistant Director of Residence Life.

Will I be able to store my personal belongings on campus during the summer?
To meet the needs of those students who travel the furthest to join us, a limited amount of storage space is available in the Towers for those students who live 500 miles or more from campus. Information regarding this storage will be posted on campus near the end of the Spring semester.

Do all freshmen and sophomores have to live on campus?
Please click here to read our Freshman/Sophomore Residence Policy.

What size refrigerator can I bring?
Compact refrigerators (3 cubic feet) are permitted in the Living Learning Centers. You also have the option to rent a micro-fridge unit, which contains both a microwave and a refrigerator, from our office.

How do I find out about housing for next year?
The housing process for Fall, 2008 will begin in late January or early February of 2008. Upper-class students may choose to participate in Group Housing (groups of 12, 16, or 26 students who share a common interest choosing to reside together in the Towers), to select an apartment in Brottier Hall (eligible to students who will be at Junior status or above), or to participate in traditional room selection. As the time for Housing Selection draws nearer, information will be updated on this website.

Will parents be notified if a student gets “in trouble” in the residence halls?
In most circumstances, the Office of Residence Life does not notify parents of policy violations. We believe that students are adults, capable of making their own decisions. Sometimes students make poor decisions, but we hope to educate them so they can learn from their mistakes. A Residence Life staff member will contact parents either by phone or letter in the event of a second alcohol violation or a first drug violation.

Are the buildings air conditioned?
Yes. All of our Living Learning Centers are air conditioned.

Is smoking permitted in the Living Learning Centers?
No. All Duquesne University buildings are non-smoking
facilities.

Are the rooms carpeted?
The apartments in Brottier Hall are carpeted. All other Living Learning Centers have rooms that are not carpeted.

Are phones provided in the rooms?
Effective May 2007, dial tone will be provided in residence hall rooms only upon request. Please visit Student Telephone Services (STS) for more information.

How do I get cable television service?
Expanded basic cable service is provided in all rooms in the traditional residence halls. Comcast, our cable provider, will be on campus at the beginning of each semester to provide students the opportunity to purchase premium packages. Residents of Brottier Hall must make their own arrangements for cable service through Comcast.

What about computer access?
Each room is equipped with one internet port per student, and service is included in the room fees. Please visit Computing and Technology Services (CTS) for more information on campus computing.
