  2. Campus Ministry: Call 412-396-6020
    Campus Ministry invites the participation of the entire campus community in religious, social, and community activities. The members of the department strive to serve the religious and spiritual needs of the whole university community with special emphasis on the needs of the students. Programs to meet individual needs and interests are designed by the community. All are invited to stop in the Campus Ministry center in Towers Living/ Learning Center or Room 102 in the Administration Building to offer suggestions for programs or services, or just to get acquainted with the Campus Ministry staff.

    Campus Ministers are available for spiritual direction, counseling or sympathetic listening, all in strict confidence. The Campus Ministry Center, located in the Towers Living/Learning Center is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. midnight. The center is a drop-in place for quiet study, private prayer in the prayer room, refreshments, or a talk with a campus minister.

    Campus Ministry provides a listing of worship services/ times of all faiths in the area. The University Chapel is open each day from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. for all, for private prayer and meditation. Special prayer services, social programs, mission trips and volunteer opportunities are publicized throughout the campus. All are invited to participate in these services and activities.

    Located on the ground floor of Rockwell Hall (beside the Burger King/ Pizza Hut), the Career Services Center is open five days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and every other Saturday during the academic year. Career Services provides career development assistance to Duquesne University students, from the freshman through Alumni levels. Our comprehensive list of services includes help choosing a major, planning a job search, resume writing, and refining interviewing skills, in addition to providing opportunities for full and part- time, seasonal, temporary and internship employment available at our DuqConnection website.. Each fall and spring semester, Career Services also hosts two major career fairs which are held on campus in the Student Union Ballroom.     Whether living with relatives or commuting from their own apartment, the Office of Commuter Affairs offers valuable services and programs for commuter students. Assistance is available in many areas, including:

    Parking and Transportation:
    The Office of Commuter Affairs can assist students with University parking information and in forming carpools. PAT bus schedules are available. Bus passes are sold in the Information Center of the Union.

    Off-Campus Housing Information:
    Up-to-date listings are maintained of rooms, apartments, houses and "roommate needed" situations. Area maps and apartment rental guide is also available.

    Commuter Message Center:
    If someone needs to get a non-emergency message to a student on campus, they may call 412-396-6660. The message is posted outside the Office for the student to pick up.

    Adult Learner Services:
    Services are provided for adult learners including newsletters and family programming.

    Commuter Assistant Program:
    This program is a support network of upperclassmen students who serve as advisors and provide resources for new undergraduate commuters. C.A.s plan activities, provide information and supply encouragement.

    Other Services Include:
    Commuter Update, distribution of Student Directory and Student Handbook to commuter students, part-time job boards, health service nurse, special programs and events for commuters and their families.

    The Office is located in the Duquesne Union, Room 117. The Office is open Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. and Friday until 4:30 p.m. For further information call 412-396-6660.

    Commuter Center:
    Located on the first floor of the Duquesne Union, the Center provides a great deal of space and several services for Duquesne's Commuting population. The Commuter Center includes a very large lounge area equipped with comfortable furniture, television, refrigerator and microwave oven. Other features of the Commuter Center include several offices, a quiet study room and a fully staffed computer facility. The hours of the Commuter Center coincide with those of the Duquesne Union.

    Commuter Council:
    Commuter Council is a student run governing body designed to identify commuter concerns and to provide educational, social and service-oriented programs for the University's large commuter population.
  5. Comprehensive Student Advisement: Call 412-396-5046
    Students pursuing undergraduate studies are assigned to a student advisor who will work with them throughout their undergraduate career at the University. The student advisor, located in the school in which the student is majoring, aids the student in his / her interaction with all officials throughout the University.

    Advisors are trained to assist students in developing and maintaining academic schedules, understanding financial aid, and interacting with professionals in other fields who assist them in their social, psychological and spiritual development. To help maximize their success and satisfaction with university life, students are encouraged to meet with their advisor regularly.

    If you should have any questions regarding you academic program or school requirements, or should need assistance in choosing a major or location appropriate support service, please do not hesitate to contact your student advisor.

The Store sells Apple and Dell, computers and many peripherals to students at discounted prices.   7. Counseling Services
    Confidential counseling for personal and social problems is available from a variety of on-campus offices. Students experiencing difficulties related to homesickness, depression, drugs/alcohol, sexuality, interpersonal conflicts, and other personal concerns are encouraged to contact a counselor at any of the following locations.

    A. University Counseling Center: Call 412-396-6204
    Students can obtain free confidential counseling for personal and social concerns at the University Counseling Center. Some of the concerns that students discuss include homesickness, relationship problems, depression, anxiety, interpersonal conflicts, eating disorders and anger management.

    Psychologists and a consulting psychiatrist provide psychological evaluations and therapy to all Duquesne University students. Doctoral psychology candidates, under the supervision of senior staff, also provide counseling services. All consultations and therapy are free and strictly confidential.

    Career exploration counseling is also available to students in order to help them define their interests. The Center administers national testing programs (paper and pencil) and provides information and applications for many exams such as CLEP, MCAT, DAT PRAXIS, etc. The counseling Center is located in room 308 of the Administration Building.

    B. Health Service: Call 412-396-1650 A board certified physician and professional nurses are available to evaluate students and provide referrals as appropriate. Duquesne University Health Service provides some pre-packaged prescriptions that are physician-dispensed. Other prescriptions may be filled at the Mercy Health Center, across the street.

    Meal choices are designed to please the tastes of the majority. Second helpings are available, when the original plate has been brought back to serving line. The Food Service manager in the Towers welcomes constructive criticism as well as any requests for special foods of your liking. In establishing the rates of room and board, consideration has been given to expected absenteeism. Therefore, NO ALLOWANCE CAN BE MADE FOR MEALS MISSED DURING THE TERM.

    A. Bag Lunches
    Students who are unable to eat during mealtime for academic reasons (student teachers, clinicals, etc.) can get a bag lunch. Permission for this privilege is granted by contacting the Office of Residence Life.

    B. Express Box Lunch Program

    Students who are unable to eat during regular meal periods can purchase an Express Box Lunch with Meal Equivalency, Flex, V-Cash or cash, in the Short Stop Convenience Store. Meal Equivalency can only be used for the day in which the meal is purchased.

    C. Guest Meals
    Guests are welcome to dine in the Sean Hogan Student Dinning Center provided that they pay the individual cash rates. Guests paying these rates are entitled to the same privileges for that meal as resident students. The prices are as follows: Breakfast $4.25, Lunch/Brunch $6.00, and Dinner $7.25. Sean Hogan Student Dinning Center is an all you can eat facility. All other facilities are based on ala carte pricing.

    D. Cash Equivalency

    Residents have the option of using the meal equivalency system in the Options Café and the Off-Ramp. Cash Equivalency is a predetermined dollar amount per meal that allows students to use their ID card in these areas. If the total price is above the equivalency amount, students pay the difference in cash or flex dollars. The cash equivalency amounts are: Breakfast $3.50 Lunch/Brunch $4.80 Dinner $5.50

    E. Sick Trays
    Students who cannot take meals due to illness may request a sick tray, to be honored during regular meal hours. Sick tray slips are available from Resident Assistants or from the Health Center. A roommate or friend will assume responsibility for getting the box or tray and delivering it to the student who is sick. If any utensils or trays are borrowed, the student should return them promptly.

    F. Flex Dollars
    Resident 14/125 meal plans include a $125 flex dollars which can be used to purchase meals at Options Café, The Off-Ramp, Fisher Cafe, Java City (located in the Law School) or Rockwell Expressway. Those students wishing to switch to a 19 meal plan with $55 in flex or the 10 meal plan with $215 in flex must do so during the first two weeks of the fall and spring semester. Additional flex dollars in $25 increments may be added at any time during the course of the semester in room 333 of the Student Union.
  9. Duquesne CARES.: Call ext. 5834
    Duquesne CARES is the alcohol/other drug education, prevention and counseling program serving the Duquesne University community. The primary goals of the program are to prevent alcohol/other-drug-related problems from developing and to be of assistance to students and employees experiencing problems resulting from already-established use.

    CARES provides programs to Residence Halls, classes, groups and organizations. In addition, counseling, assessments, referrals, and support groups are offered. Students who have been cited off-campus may complete court order requirements through CARES.

    Office hours are 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with evening appointments available. Services are free and confidential. Please call 396- 5834 for additional information.
  10. Duquesne Union
    The Union provides various services for students, faculty, administration and staff.

    A. Student Activities Staff: 305 Union, Call ext. 5853
    The Student Activities professional staff administers the programs, services and facilities of the Union, and provides advisement and assistance for all student organizations and all phases of campus programs. The office is located on the 3rd floor in room 305, and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

    B. Nite Spot:

    Located on the first floor, it has billiards and ping-pong tables, foosball, air hockey, skeeball, a big screen tv and numerous computers for internet browsing. It has late night programs, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday Nights with free cappuccino, soft drinks and snacks at the set times.

    Hours: Sunday - Wednesday 9:00 a.m. - 12:00am
    Thursday- Saturday: 9:00am - 2:00am

    C. Room Reservations Office:

    Located in 305 Union, this office is responsible for scheduling all rooms in the Union, Peter Mills Auditorium, Lecture Halls, and classrooms for use by student organizations and campus departments.

    D. Union Information Center: Call ext. 6632 This is the central point on campus for providing information and services to the Duquesne community. It provides numerous services such as student organization mailboxes, PAT bus passes, FAX services, event ticket sales, lost and found, graphic services, and New York Times subscriptions.

    E. Duquesne Program Council: Room 302A, Call ext. 6619
    The Duquesne Program Council is a student run organization that offers students an opportunity to creatively program cultural, recreational, educational and social activities for the entire campus through its numerous committees.     F. Duquesne University Volunteers: Call ext. 5853
    DUV is located in 305 Union, and is the central office for all volunteer and community service work involving Duquesne students and employees. Individual students and student groups can use the services of the DUV Office to find volunteer opportunities either on campus or throughout the Pittsburgh community.

  2. Freshman Development and Special Student Services:

    The Office of Freshmen Development and Special Student Services provides the following services to students at the University.

    FRESHMEN: The office of Freshmen Development serves to implement and direct programs which integrate and enhance the academic, curricular, and social dimensions of freshmen at Duquesne University. To accomplish this, the office is responsible for the following: new student orientation; Mentor Programs; Big Brother, Big Sister program; Freshmen Parent Weekend Programs; develops freshmen leadership through the Freshmen Class Advisory Committee; assists freshmen with finding tutors; monitors freshmen grades by interacting with the Comprehensive Student Advisors and the individual schools; and develops programs for freshmen by interacting with the Offices of Commuter Affairs, Intramural Sports, and Residence Life.

    SPECIAL STUDENT SERVICES: The office of Special Student Services provides services to ALL university students with documented disabilities. Services such as early pre-registration, classroom relocation, specialized testing accommodations (extended time testing, seclusion testing, and oral testing, etc.), note-taking assistance and other accommodations can be arranged through the office on an individual basis. The office works with the students on communicating their needs to faculty members and the university community, and assists students in connecting with campus resources. Hours: Monday- Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30p.m. Evenings by appointment.
  3. Greek Life:
    The Office f Greek life promotes the growth and development of students who choose to affiliate with Greek Organizations and seeks to promote the Greek System as an integral productive part of the institution.

    To accomplish this mission, the Office promotes the noble ideas of academic excellence, leadership, philanthropy, and moral development of students within the framework of the Duquesne University Mission Statement. It provides training and consulting in leadership development, group processing and interpersonal skills. It sponsors educational and social programming, and promotes a sense of community inasmuch as these promote learning outside the classroom.
  4. Health Service: Call ext. 1650
    The Health Service is located on the second floor of the Towers/Living Learning Center. Registered nurses are on duty during the hours posted. Physician's hours are daily, by appointment only. After hours care can be secured by contacting the Resident Director on duty, who will page the University physician for assistance.
    Hours: Monday- Thursday 8:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

    Primary health care can is available for all students without charge. Services performed outside the Health Services are not covered. These services include laboratory costs, emergency room care and referral to specialists. Please call beforehand to arrange all appointments. It is recommended that each student obtain health and accident insurance. "Health History" forms must be on file in the Health Service Office before receiving service by a doctor or nurse.
  5. Learning Skills Center: Call ext. 6636
    The Michael P. Weber Learning Skills Center provides several Programs and Services including a free tutorial service for all Duquesne Students. This Service provides students with competent tutors in numerous subject areas, specifically targeting subjects in which no turoing is provided or offered through their respective departments. Our tutors also provide developmental tutoring to increase a students knowledge in any subject area either as preperation for enrollment in a course or for self-enrichment.   6. Maintenance and Housekeeping The Maintenance staff is responsible for the physical operation of the building. If there is a maintenance problem, contact a Resident Assistant. If the problem is not corrected, contact a Resident Director.

    The housekeeping staff is responsible for the cleanliness of the hallways, bathrooms, and lounges. THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CLEANLINESS OF RESIDENTS ROOMS. If a problem arises regarding cleanliness, contact a Resident Assistant, who will fill out a maintenance request for you.
  7. Police Department: General Information, 6002; EMERGENCY, 4747 The university police are located in the University Public Safety Building at Stevenson and Gibbons Streets and are available 24-hrs a day to provide service and protection for the University Community. The University Police should be contacted for all police, fire, and medical emergencies.

    The Department offers a variety if programs and information concerning personal safety at no charge. To arrange for presentation or to obtain information concerning personal safety, please contact the Administration Offices between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at x6004.
  8. Residence Housing Association (RHA): Call 5033
    The Residence Hall Association serves as the representative student governing body for Duquesne University's Living/Learning Centers. Created by students, for students, the council was organized to insure the existence of an atmosphere conducive to positive individual and group experiences for the residents of the five residence halls.

    The Residence Hall Association functions in two broad areas: (1) it insures full representation of the residents students to the administration, and (2) it provides programming to increase the individual's satisfaction with the residence hall experience.

    Residence Hall Association is composed of five officers elected by the entire resident population, as well as all resident students who are considered members of RHA and are encouraged to participate in its meetings and activities.

    The president of Residence Hall Association serves as an appointed voting-senator of the Student Government Association. RHA also has representatives on the Student Life Advisory Board, the Publications Board, the Parking Appeals Board and various other committees within the University.

    RHA sponsors annual programs such as the movie series on DU Channel 46, The Rubber Duck Race and Siblings Weekend in their efforts to make Duquesne University residence halls "More Like Home!"
